NYC scooter rules

Yes, scooters are legal in Central Park.

New York City legalized electric scooters in 2020. Central Park's 6.1-mile loop is one of the best places in Manhattan to ride one — the road is closed to cars year-round and the surface is smooth.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Stay on bike paths. No pedestrian-only walkways inside the park.
  • Yield to pedestrians. Always. They have right of way at every crossing.
  • Speed limit is 25 mph in the park — easy, since our scooters cap at 18 mph anyway.
  • Helmet required for riders under 18. We include one for every rider.
  • One rider per scooter. No tandems or passengers.

You can also ride outside the park on the Hudson River Greenway (NYC's longest car-free path, 13 miles), and on any street bike lane in Manhattan.

Where to ride
